The New Jerusalem Bible (NJB) is a Catholic translation of the Bible published in the United States. It was created by the American theologian and biblical scholar, James Vielle, and was first published in 1910 by Thomas Nelson.
The first edition was based on the French translation of the Bible by the same author. It was also influenced by the work of the French Biblical scholar, J. B. P. Fouquet. Vielle translated many of the passages in a more literal way than his predecessors, resulting in a translation that is sometimes controversial. It has been criticized for its style and vocabulary.
Vielle later translated the Bible into Spanish and English, and in the 1930s and 1940s, the NJB was translated into other languages, including Portuguese and German.
